Julie Andrews made a career out of being as sweet as a spoonful of sugar. Blessed with a stunningly silky voice, she sang and smiled her way straight to stardom. After a childhood of performing on stage and radio, Julie hit it big on Broadway as cockney cutie Eliza Doolittle in My Fair Lady, a role that led to her being cast as Cinderella on the Rodgers and Hammerstein musical’s broadcast on CBS. Julie frequently appeared on the Ed Sullivan Show, but wasn’t deemed a big enough name for the film version of My Fair Lady (1964), so the role went instead to Audrey Hepburn. While she missed out on the role she made famous on Broadway, Disney was perfectly happy to cast her as the magical nanny of everyone’s dreams in Mary Poppins (1964). The movie was a box office monster for the mouse and won Andrews the Oscar for Best Actress. In her acceptance speech, she thanked the studio head who turned her down for My Fair Lady for making her Oscar win possible. Despite the epic burn, her role as a singing nun in The Sound of Music (1965) cemented her good-girl image, making dramatic roles hard to come by. How do you solve an image problem like Ms. Andrews? Julie turned miss goody-two-shoes into miss-nudie-two-boobs, by giving a thoroughly grown up performance as a dance hall singer turned spy who pops out of her top while performing for soldiers in Darling Lili (1970), getting sexy as as a saucy singer in the Dudley Moore comedy 10 (1979) and replacing nanny with naughty in S.O.B. (1981). We were some happy SOB’s to see Julie unleash her practically perfect in every way pair when she rips the top off her dress off and lets her hills come alive. Supercalisexpealadocious! Julie gave us more funbaggage and a glimpse of her butt-ence tuppence in Duet for One (1986). After taking a brief break from acting in the early nineties, the mature Julie appeared in The Princess Diaries (2001) and The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement (2004) while voicing characters in Shrek 2 (2004), Shrek the Third (2007), Shrek Forever After (2010) and Aquaman (2018).
